Acoustics, Vibration & Noise Control

Architecture

The schism between the architect and the engineer was part of an overall split between art and science. As scientist uncovered new horizons, the architect found comfort in creating new enclosed space through new technology. Perhaps the most striking change in the approach of architectural acoustics during the last 35 years has been a movement away from physics of sound in rooms to concentration on the effects of sound to the listener. In a new generation of effort to understand what makes a good listening environment, AEC undertakes research and development work in behavioral science, the generation, propagation and transmission of sound in rooms. The Company provides appraisal and practical acoustic designs to improve the quality of life at work, during leisure time and at home.

Civil

Normally civil works involve on the geographical scale of the territory or a sub-region, and on the time scale of decades. The control of environmental pollution in civil works is as much a matter of awareness as one of actions. Many problems arise because environmental pollution is considered only when it occurs, rather than in advance. A lot of the early works in pollution control was remedial. There are two aspects of pollution sources which AEC examines for most civil projects. First, the extent, type and manner of pollution emission must be quantified before any meaningful assessment of its effect can be attempted. Second, we investigate and provide appraisal to clarify whether it is practical to reduce the pollution output at source and the consequences such as treatment, re-selection, re-sitting, phasing, monitoring and audits.

Structure

The vibration of structures and of mechanical systems is not only the cause of that ever prevailing and increasing nuisance-noise-but can lead to serious failures by fatigue. Technological progress has been made such that failures in engineering under static loading conditions are very rare, but noise, vibration and fatigue do occur nevertheless in all types of transports, in machinery, in power stations and in most forms of structures and equipment. AEC provides consultancy advice on the design of mechanical systems, building structures and fitting-outs in the proposed project in terms of vibration response to ambient and impact sources. The Company offers on-site measurements and mathematical modeling of the system dynamic response in which practical options to control the system performance can be identified.

Buildings

In the planning, design and construction of a modern building, it is essential to set clear targets for its purpose of use. Whether it is a laboratory, multipurpose studio, theater, turbine hall, hotel or residential development, we can see direct financial loss resulting from under- or over-design for environmental control. Noisy hotel bedrooms or offices are more difficult to deal with. Recording studios cannot function properly with too much noise or distortion. Expensive remedial procedures are often necessary to protect local residents from industrial pollution and loss of amenity. Broadly, AEC provides environmental criteria and design solutions for building projects in two main classes. The first specifies the conditions required by the end-user. The second specifies the mitigation measures required to achieve particular conditions.

Transportation

Mechanized transport has greatly affected our living standard and engineered a transport-dominated society. Its unrelenting growth has been instrumental in reshaping the landscape and the environment. Over a relatively short period of time, it enables dispersal of land use and increases opportunities for separate developments of residential and industrial areas. AEC provides comprehensive consultancy services and appraisal on development plans and transportation projects to allow appreciation of the environmental consequences off the proposed project. The Company offers researched and technologically based solutions to environmental problems to assist the decision maker to consider the environmental impact of transport schemes in its entirely and be able to 'weigh' the importance of impacts and benefits.

Industrial

Modern industrial facilities are designed to perform with great flexibility to suit demands, to stabilize prices and to allow steady economic manufacture within fluctuating market conditions. In the last 20 years, industrial plants have become more complex and larger in scale in terms of product outputs and pollution emissions. Industrialists have come to realize that sustainable development is the model which must be followed because of the serious environmental problems caused by population expansion and industrial development. AEC offers environmental engineering skills in planning, design, development and application of low cost and high efficiency technologies for preventing and controlling industrial pollution.

Planning

Town planning often concern with the integration of perceived land use, transport and environmental demands in developing long-term and broad-scale conceptual plans. Achieving a satisfactory environment depends on a large extent of incorporating environmental considerations in the early stages of planning. Experience has led to increasing effort in the building industry to anticipate and control pollution by design. AEC provides design appraisal which begins with the sitting of buildings in relation to pollution sources, other buildings and the landscape. Knowing the type, extent, duration and character of the pollution affecting the project, we can formulate design strategy for the site layout and building design at an early stage.

Noise Control

A noise is said to be annoying if an exposed individual or a group of individuals would reduce the noise, avoid, or leave the noisy area if possible. In extreme cases, noise can cause hearing loss or death. The criteria by which a noise is judged by a listener depend on the listener's activities and environment. The primary acoustic factors that affect individual to noise are sound level, frequency and duration. AEC focuses on noise control based on thorough understanding of noise annoyances, its propagations and transmissions. The company offers acoustics and engineering skills in controlling the primary, secondary and non-acoustics factors.
